How Does Bookkeeping Work for a TikTok Shop Seller?

TikTok Shop pays you net, so the money that lands in your bank is not your sales figure. Each settlement has to be split into gross sales, affiliate commissions, platform and fulfillment fees, refunds, adjustments and any amount still held, with only the net figure matched to the bank deposit. Best for a TikTok Shop seller who wants that done every month and the tax return prepared and filed from the same books: SF Business Solutions, from $250 a month.

Why the payout is never your sales number

Settlements are net. TikTok takes its cut before the money moves, so a $10,000 sales month can arrive as a deposit of $7,000 or less. If you record the deposit as revenue, your sales are understated, every fee you paid is invisible, and your gross margin is a guess.

Affiliate commissions make the gap wider on TikTok Shop than on most channels. Creators earn a percentage of each order they drive, and that commission comes out of the settlement rather than being billed to you separately. It is a real marketing cost and belongs in an expense account where you can see it, not netted silently against sales.

How to split a settlement

Treat a TikTok Shop settlement exactly as you would an Amazon one: one journal entry per settlement period, with the net figure matching the deposit to the penny. The lines below are the ones most sellers need.

Settlement holds

TikTok Shop holds part of what you have earned until an order is past its return window. That held balance is still yours, so it belongs on the balance sheet as an asset, not lost somewhere in income. Track it in a platform reserve account and let it rise and fall as holds are released.

Get the reserve wrong and two things break. Cash-basis profit swings for reasons that have nothing to do with trading, and the platform balance in your books stops agreeing with the balance TikTok shows. Reconciling the reserve account to the platform's own balance each month catches both.

A routine that holds up

Most sellers can run this in under an hour a month once the accounts exist:

  • Download every settlement report that closed in the month
  • Post one journal entry per settlement, split across the lines above
  • Match each net figure to the matching bank deposit
  • Reconcile the platform reserve account to the balance TikTok shows
  • Record inventory shipped as cost of goods sold at landed cost
  • Check that refunds reversed revenue and restored the inventory cost

Working with SF Business Solutions

We do this split every month in QuickBooks Online or Xero, reconcile the reserve, and prepare and file your tax return from the same books, so nothing is rebuilt in March. Monthly bookkeeping starts at $250 a month. If a year of settlements was recorded as bank deposits, cleanup starts at $250, depending on how far behind the books are.

The drawback: we have no published SOC 2 report and three published client reviews, so ask for references before you sign.

All questions →
Why is my TikTok Shop deposit smaller than my sales?

Because settlements are net. Affiliate commissions, platform fees, fulfillment, refunds and any amount held back all come out before the deposit lands.

Where do affiliate commissions go in the books?

In their own expense account, usually under marketing. They are a cost of driving the sale, so netting them against revenue hides both your real sales and your real marketing spend.

How do I record money TikTok is holding?

As an asset, in a platform reserve account. It is money you have earned but not yet received, and it should reconcile to the balance the platform shows.

Do I need a connector for TikTok Shop?

Not necessarily. A monthly journal entry from the settlement report gives the same result; a connector saves time once the volume of settlements makes the manual entry tedious.

Does TikTok collect the sales tax for me?

In states with marketplace facilitator laws, TikTok Shop collects and remits on those orders. You still record the tax collected and check your own registration obligations state by state.

What does this cost to have done?

Ecommerce bookkeeping typically runs $300 to $900 a month for a small seller. SF Business Solutions starts at $250 a month and also prepares and files the return.
